Building an Email List

Whether you are putting together your very first email marketing campaign or you are an old pro – your email list is the key to your success or failure.  Delivering your online email newsletters or promotional pieces to your email list gives you your best audience – a targeted group of people who have already expressed interest in your product or services.  This is considered permission based or opt-in emails as they have actually given their permission to send them more information.  When you send to the general public, anyone who hasn’t expressed interest. It is considered spam and it will be kicked right out of the system.

So how do you build your email list?  Here are some suggestions for getting people to sign up to receive your information:

Have a sign up sheet on your web site for people to click on for more information.
Have an option for people visiting your website to subscribe to your newsletter
If you have a retail store, have a sign up form available at the register.
Join a networking group. Use leads groups or other business functions.
If you participate in trades shows, have a sign up sheet at your booth
Restaurants are now giving away free appetizers or a glass of wine if you sign up for their emails
Most people will sign up to be added to email lists to be notified in advance about sales and new product lines
Use your existing customer base to get referrals.
If you send out catalogs, have a place to sign up to receive emails.
If you are putting on a seminar, have a sign up option to receive advance notice of future seminars and events.
Online shopping cart order forms should always have an option for more info.
You can send out promotional postcards and include a sign up option.
If you put on any how-to-classes, include a sign up sheet before or after class.
Have a promotional event at your store and send out invites. Have sign up forms at the event to be notified of future sales and special discounts.

There are also email marketing companies that have lists of people who are interested in your products and /or services that you can purchase for your email marketing campaign.
